Bees Buzz by Blazers to Take 7-Game Lead in DAC
IRVING, Texas – Dallas College Eastfield's No. 1-ranked baseball team beat No. 10 Dallas College North Lake 11-5 Thursday in the first game of its Dallas Athletic Conference series.
Games 2 and 3 will be played at noon Friday and Saturday at Eastfield. The Harvester Bees (35-11, 19-3 DAC) will honor its 2001 and 2006 National Junior College Athletic Association Division III national championship teams Friday and Saturday on Alumni Weekend. Saturday's game will be broadcast on the DAC Sports Network.
The Harvester Bees have a seven-game lead in the league with eight games to play.
Sebastian Palma went 3 for 5 with two runs batted in, Angel Gutierrez had three hits, including a double, and drove in a run, and Billy Spratt was 3 for 5. Sergio Gastelum was 2 for 5 with three RBI, and Sebastian Vasquez had two hits and an RBI in four trips to the plate as the Bees rapped 17 hits.
Gastelum's two-run single in the first inning gave Eastfield a 3-0 lead. North Lake (22-24, 12-10) scored three in the second, tying the game on Salvador De La Garza's two-run single to center.
De La Garza was 3 for 5 with two RBI. He was the only Blazer with multiple hits.
Palma's singled to left to drive in a run in the fourth after Bear Herak's sacrifice fly pulled the Blazers within a run. North Lake's Jesse Orozco homered to left in the fifth to make it a one-run game again. But Eastfield scored on an error in the sixth, and tacked on three more in the eighth on Gastelum's RBI single to right, another North Lake error and Palma's RBI single to left to make it 10-5.
Caleb Deane (3-0) pitched 3.2 innings in middle relief, allowing a run, two hits and a walk to get the win. Cooper Sexton shut the door with two scoreless innings in which he allowed one hit, while striking out two.
Eastfield outhit North Lake 17-10.
Players from past Eastfield teams will be recognized and honored over the next two days to spotlight the Bees' powerful program. Members of the national championship team will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Food and drinks will be served to Harvester Bees baseball alumni.
